Radio 1 Vintage

Hi all

The BBC are broadcasting programmes on a "pop-up" station called Radio 1 Vintage. They do not appear to be picked up in the radio cache.

I have found a way of recording them using the PVR and the pid recursive option (there is a series pid for the programmes) but out of curiosity, is there a way to "force" GiP to pick up the programmes?

Thanks for you help.

Hi Don :-)
This is part of the celebrations for the 50-year anniversary of BBC Radio 1
(but I'm sure you already knew that!); more at

This is expected; only regular BBC Radio 1 schedule feed is
parsed by GiP:

to pick up the programmes?
... Yes; you'd have to (temporarily) patch your local
copy of the GiP perl script so as to include the
"Radio 1 Vintage" schedule feed found at:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1vintage/programmes/schedules

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

On my script (heavily pathed v3.01 on Windows):

===================================

# channel ids be found on http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/stations
sub channels_schedule {
return {
'national' => {
'radio1/programmes/schedules/england' => 'BBC Radio 1',
+ 'radio1vintage/programmes/schedules' => 'Radio 1 Vintage',
'1xtra/programmes/schedules' => 'BBC Radio 1Xtra',

===================================

(unfortunately, my mailer may mangle the patch
formatting, still you get the drift...).

Save the patch and force a radio.cache refrech.
After that, on my system I get:

get_iplayer --type=radio "Radio 1 Vintage" =>

Matches:
21885: Radio 1 Vintage - Radio 1 Vintage, starts 30 September at 6am, Radio
1 V
intage, p059k4m3
21886: Radio 1 Vintage - 50 Year Countdown, Radio 1 Vintage, p059kfx4
21887: Radio 1 Vintage - Nick Grimshaw and Tony Blackburn, Radio 1 Vintage,
p05
9kfxc
21888: Radio 1 Vintage - Kenny Everett, Radio 1 Vintage, p059kfxn
21889: Radio 1 Vintage - David Jensen, Radio 1 Vintage, p059kfxy
21890: Radio 1 Vintage - Colin & Edith, Radio 1 Vintage, p059kfy6
21891: Radio 1 Vintage - Adrian Juste, Radio 1 Vintage, p059kfyh
21892: Radio 1 Vintage - Classic Albums with Roger Scott, Radio 1 Vintage,
p059
kfyr
21893: Radio 1 Vintage - Fearne & Reggie, Radio 1 Vintage, p059kfz0
21894: Radio 1 Vintage - Nicky Campbell, Radio 1 Vintage, p059kfz8
21895: Radio 1 Vintage - The Radio 1 Roadshow, Radio 1 Vintage, p059kfzk
21896: Radio 1 Vintage - Tony Blackburn, Radio 1 Vintage, p059n6gl

As you can see, all shows have the same <name>
& <nameshort>, for anything more specific you'd
have to refine your search, e.g.

get_iplayer --type=radio --fields=episode "Jensen" =>

Matches:
21889: Radio 1 Vintage - David Jensen, Radio 1 Vintage, p059kfxy

I really enjoyed his TV programme when I was a kid, but never heard him
on the radio. Have just got hold of this, and looking forward to
hearing it. Thanks! (No patch needed, in case others would like to do
the same, just `--type radio --pid p059kfxn'.)

I haven't heard it yet but will be downloading all the shows on Tuesday
after Radio1 Vintage ends.

Kenny was one of the most inventive and imaginative DJs in my lifetime.
He started his career on the offshore station Radio London (Big L) in
December 64 where he also had a joint show (the Kenny and Cash Show)
with the late Dave Cash. He joined the Light Programme before it morphed
into Radios 1 and 2 and had a controversial career with the Beeb, from
where he was fired in 1970 for a joke about the then Transport Minister
that overstepped the mark. In the years before he died he was with
London's Capital Radio, so unfortunately, I wasn't able to hear his
programmes up here in Manchester.

In his radio programmes he created various personas (some of whom, like
Captain Kremmen, transferred to his TV shows) and used multitracking
techniques to create and record many jingles throughout his career.
Truly a radio genius. Sadly missed.

Many thanks for the responses to my query - especially Vangelis whose erudite information is always welcome.

Being a devout coward when it comes to editing/patching things like this, I'll stick to me pid-recursive solution, but it's handy to know for future reference.

== A needed follow-up, thanks to a person contacting me direct ==

If you went ahead and patched your script last week,
successive radio.cache refreshes will have got you a total of
56 "Radio 1 Vintage" entries.

However, if you decide(d) to patch the script anytime
during this week (starting Monday Oct 2nd),
forcing a radio.cache refresh will only populate it with
Monday's "Radio 1 Vintage" programmes; likewise,
if you delay patching until after the end of this week
(after Sunday Oct 8th), then you'll get 0 "R1V" entries
inside the radio.cache; this is because a default refresh
will only append to existing cache the new content of current week
(http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1vintage/programmes/schedules/this_week)
in the schedule feed.

If you've patched your GiP script after 01/10/2017,
you'll have to rebuild the radio.cache as far as
"Radio 1 Vintage" is concerned, by issuing in a
GiP command prompt:

get_iplayer --type=radio -f --refresh-include="Radio 1
Vintage" --refresh-limit-radio=30 --force

This will make sure you get all 56 R1V entries inside the cache!

Best regards,
Vangelis.

PS/OT: Here in Greece, the first day of the week
is Sunday, in Greek it's Κυριακή, translated in
English as the Day of our Lord (Jesus); Monday is
called Δευτέρα, litterally meaning "Second".
While dealing with this follow-up, I realised that
in the UK Monday is considered the first day of the week;
I did find the following small article
http://www.anythinglefthanded.co.uk/what-day-starts-the-week.html
quite interesting as to what is the standard
in various other countries :-)

53 actually according to the episode guide. Although the episode numbers
do indeed go up to 56, for some reason, numbers 1, 2, 3 and 5 are not
available and there is an unnumbered joint episode with Nick Grimshaw
and Tony Blackburn.

Great listening to these, especially the earlier era for me. As a
massive offshore radio fan of the 60s and 70s, Radio 1 never did quite
cut it for me and I more or less stopped listening to it altogether in
the late 70s/early 80s, with the advent of punk, hence the preferences
of the earlier days. For us in Manchester from 1974 we had the vastly
superior commercial station Piccadilly Radio, led by Philip Birch who
had run previously Radio London - in those days, commercial radio was
exciting and vibrant, quite a contrast to the robotic boring entity it
has now become, but I digress...

I notice the quip that got Kenny Everett sacked from Radio 1 was
included in his episode. It was so obviously tongue in cheek but a
reflection of how amazingly "stiff" Auntie was in those days!
